Ever Wonder About the HS Gym?
The high school gym was built, literally, with a Patented Design
The Style of the gym is known as a "Pit Gym"
Who and Why
Evansville architect Ralph E. Legeman patented a simple solution to the problem
of building larger gyms at a lower cost: go underground. In Legeman’s design,
only the roof and upper walls stand above ground. The design eliminated the need
for elaborate structural supports for seating and roofing, which were expensive
and constrained by limits in technology. At least 27 bowl gymnasiums were
constructed in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana, including a fine example in
Trafalgar where the Braves' Basketball teams play their home games.
